SLHS Bands and Choir Bring Awards Back From Florida

November 22, 2014

A recent trip to the Sunshine State resulted in high praise for the Spirit Lake High School bands and choirs. The National Music Festival was held in Orlando, Florida and consisted of schools from seven different states competing over two-days.

The Spirit Lake Jazz Band received a gold and first-place in their class, along with the Outstanding Band Group Award and the Adjudicator Award. Emily Ayres, a tenor saxophone player, was selected as an outstanding soloist. The Concert Band was given a silver and first-place in their class.

As for the three Spirit Lake choral groups, the Concert Choir earned a gold and third-place in their class, while the Show Choir took the gold and the Vocal Jazz the silver.

The Spirit Lake bands and choirs make the trip to Florida every four years to compete. The students also made visits to the Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach, Universal Studios, and the Hard Rock Café. This year, they also saw a performance by “Blue Man Group” and had brunch at the International House of Blues.
