(Rock Rapids)– A high speed pursuit yesterday (Mon.) that went through portions of Lyon and Osceola counties resulted in the arrest of a Sioux Falls man on multiple charges.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says it all started when a deputy attempted to stop an eastbound vehicle on Highway 9 about a mile east of Rock Rapids. Authorities say the suspect pulled over briefly, then took off at a high rate of speed.
Deputies initiated a pursuit that continued eastbound reaching speeds of over 100 miles-per-hour. The chase continued into Osceola county on Highway 9 before turning south on Highway 60 Boulevard. The pursuit continued through Sibley and onto exit 48 where the suspect attempted to turn, causing the vehicle to roll. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels.
A Lyon County Sheriff’s deputy lost control of his squad car at that same location.
Authorities say the suspect wanted in the pursuit then exited the vehicle and was immediately taken into custody. He wasn’t injured.
The Lyon county deputy, who’s name wasn’t released, was taken to the Osceola County Hospital for observation.
Both the suspect vehicle and the Lyon County Sheriff’s squad car, were totaled.
The suspect wanted in the pursuit, identified as 48-year-old Eric Hopewell of Sioux Falls, was booked into the Lyon county jail on charges of eluding…an aggravated misdemeanor; careless driving…a simple misdemeanor; and speeding…also a simple misdemeanor. He’s being held on a $2,000 bond.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the Osceola County Ambulance and the Sibley Fire Department.
Authorities say the incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
