(Spencer)– The Iowa State Patrol says it will have an increased presence on area highways over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Officials with the patrol’s Post Six office in Spencer say troopers will put a special emphasis on alcohol enforcement, speeding, driving while distracted and seatbelt violations.
A number of other local law enforcement agencies are also involved in a campaign to crack down on those not wearing seatbelts. The fine for a seatbelt violation in Iowa is $127.
And when it comes to distracted driving, officers say texting and talking on cell phones are at the top of the list. The fine for texting and driving in Iowa is $100.
Officials also remind anyone who’s going to be drinking to be sure they have a designated driver.
And troopers urge everyone to drive defensively…especially in high volume traffic areas. Motorists are reminded to slow down and have plenty of patience.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend ranks among the deadliest throughout the year on Iowa highways. And officials say their enforcement efforts this weekend are intended to try to keep those numbers down.
