SMU To Hold Motor Workshop

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Officials with Spencer Municipal Utilities are putting out a special call for commercial and residential customers to attend a special event next month.

SMU Sales and Marketing Coordinator Amanda Gloyd says they’ll be holding a Motor Systems Management Workshop Thursday, July 7th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer.

Gloyd says the half-day workshop will focus on reducing energy costs and increasing the reliability of motor systems.

Gloyd says motors use more than half of all electricity and their efficiencies contribute significantly to expensive peak demand.

She says the seminar is designed for managers and employees of facilities that use motors, including manufacturing firms, local governments, water and wastewater authorities, hospitals and schools.

Topics that will be covered include new and emerging motor efficiency standards, advanced motor technologies, adjustable speed drives, and how to locate resources for additional technical support on motor systems.

The workshop will be taught by Gilbert McCoy from Washington State University and Richard DeFay from Cooper Development Association. The two men have conducted dozens of motor efficiency assessments at various industrial facilities.

The Workshop is free to all SMU customers who use electric motors in their operations as well as businesses that sell or maintain motors.

It’s being made possible in part through a grant from the Iowa Power Fund.
