U Of I President Dr. Sally Mason Visits Iowa Great Lakes

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– The President of the University of Iowa made the rounds in the Iowa Great Lakes today (Wednesday).

Dr. Sally Mason was the keynote speaker at a noon meeting of the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club and spoke late this (Wed.) afternoon at a gathering of Friends of Lakeside Lab at Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji.

Mason said one of the messages she’s portraying on her trip is that the University isn’t just limited to the Iowa City area. She says new agreements the university has forged with community colleges, including Iowa Lakes Community College, makes it possible for people to obtain degrees in a number of programs from the University of Iowa while remaining in their home town. She added the University will be signing a similar agreement with Northwest Iowa Community College on Thursday. She says it also makes it easier for students to transfer credits from community colleges to the University of Iowa.

Mason also addressed the collaboration between the University of Iowa and the other regent institutions with Lakeside Lab. She expects that will only continue to grow, saying the opportunities the lab provides to the insitutions is invaluable.

Mason also spoke of the rebuilding efforts on the campus at Iowa City following the disastrous flood of 2008. She thinks most people don’t understand just how devastating it was on the university and its facilities.

Regarding the recent shake-up in the leadership of the Board of Regents, Mason says she’s always enjoyed a very good relationship with every board member, and she looks for that to continue.
