DNR Officials Not Prepared To Issue No Wake Rule Just Yet

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– DNR officials say they’re getting bombarded by requests for a blanket no-wake rule on all parts of the Iowa Great Lakes. But Rich Jordet, a District Supervisor for the DNR, tells KUOO news they agency isn’t prepared to do that just yet. He says a 5 mph no-wake rule is already in effect within 300 feet of shoreline on all Dickinson county lakes.

Jordet adds the situation, as of now atleast, isn’t as bad as 1993 when West Lake Okoboji reached 39 inches over crest level. As of yesterday (Thurs.) afternoon, the lake was only at 23 inches over crest.

Jordet says a lot of factors, including impacts on tourism and the economy, need to be factored when considering a total no-wake rule. He says DNR commissioners have the power to make that ruling, but he says they won’t do it unless there’s local support for it.

Jordet also reminds boaters to check their hoists regularly to make sure boats are secure. He says those concerned their boat may be knocked out of the hoist by wave action or strong wind should strongly consider removing them.

And those with docks that are under water or about to go under are reminded to make sure that any power going to them is disconnected.
