DNR To Hold Public Meeting On Plans To Resore A Palo Alto County Lake

November 22, 2014

(Ruthven)– Plans to restore a Palo Alto county lake will be unveiled to the public at a meeting scheduled for 5:00 p.m. August 15th at the Lost Island Nature Center near Ruthven.

Virgin Lake is a 220-acre shallow natural lake which has become turbid, is prone to dense algae blooms and has little benefit to fisheries or wildlife.

Bryan Hellyer, Wildlife Management Biologist with the DNR, says survey and design phases of the project were completed last month. He says the public will be able to see specifics of the plan, which includes a drawdown to stimulate plant growth, eliminate common carp and compact bottom sediments.

He sites similar restoration projects in the region, including those at Diamond Lake and Jemmerson Slough in Dickinson county, that were very successful.
