RC & D Grant Benefits Glacial Trail Scenic Byway

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)—A grant through the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, Iowa Community Cultural Grant Program has made it possible to better pinpoint little known cultural and historical attractions along 11 unique byways in Iowa, including the Glacial Trail Scenic Byway here in northwest Iowa. The byway passes through portions of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay and O’Brien counties.
Sheriffa Jones of the local Resource and Conservation Development, Incorporated office in Spencer says the grant helped identify and pinpoint attractions such as the town of Old O’Brien, historic cemeteries and churches, and more. She adds the GPS data gathered through the project will help the Glacial Trail Scenic Byway Board of Directors and community partners better manage, preserve and promote the unique history, art and culture of the state’s historic byways and that it will also help develop quality information for visitors.
Deneb Woods, project director for the statewide byways project, says the work is especially important given the fact the number one request at Iowa’s Welcome Centers is for information about the state’s byways.
