(Emmetsburg)– The dry weather is posing a special hazard for those traveling on gravel roads. Officials say visibility is often reduced to zero when meeting or following other vehicles due to dense clouds of dust that are kicked up. Compounding matters is the fact that these roads currently have a heavy amount of large farm equipment on them due to the harvest.
Authorities say the extremely dry conditions also make it tricky when stopping on gravel roads. They say the dry gravel tends to act like marbles, making a quick stop nearly impossible.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office and other area law enforcement agencies urge motorists on gravel roads to reduce their speed and use extra caution.
