LIHEAP Sign-Up Gets Underway

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The start of the heating season has officials at Upper Des Moines Opportunity issuing a reminder for those who qualify for assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. They say applications for the program are being accepted now through April 30th for the elderly (those 60 and over) and/or disabled households. All other households can apply November 1st through April 30th, 2012.

The program is not designed to pay a household’s total energy costs. Instead, it provides supplemental assistance based on factors that include household income, household size, type of dwelling, type of heating fuel, and so on.

Households who are over LIHEAP income guidelines may be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through the medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented, paid, and unreimbursable.

Anyone who has already applied and approved for this season cannot re-apply.

More information is available by contacting the Dickinson county Upper Des Moines Opportunity office at 336-1112. The office is located on the southeast side of the Great Lakes Mall in Spirit Lake.
