SL Council To Re-Visit Abatement Program

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake is thinking about making some changes to its industrial property tax abatement program. The program, also available on the commercial level, offers incentives to businesses or industries looking to expand.

The city council Tuesday evening was presented with a request for a three-year 100 percent property tax abatement for KAPCO, Incorporated. But the council wound up deferring action on it after being informed by city staff that while that particular abatement option is offered on the commercial level, it currently is not an option on the industrial level.

The council will reconsider the request at its next meeting, at which time they’ll also consider a proposal to make that option available to industries.

The council will consider a similar proposal for Polaris Industries following a public hearing set for the council’s December 13th meeting. The company plans to construct a 33,000 square foot addition onto its existing plant in Spirit Lake.
