Sink Hole On East Side Of Big Spirit Lake Sparks Concern

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Some residents of a subdivision on the east side of Big Spirit Lake are concerned over a sink hole that’s opened up in that area.

A delegation of residents living near Jones Pasture was at this week’s Dickinson county board of supervisors meeting regarding the matter.

Officials say the sink hole opened up when a drainage tile blew out. It’s resulted in a hole that’s roughly seven feet by seven by seven feet that’s opened up in a residential driveway. Barricades have been placed around it, but residents are concerned a child or curiosity seeker may fall into it if it doesn’t get fixed.

The supervisors are questioning whether or not the county has any responsibility in the matter, saying there’s a question as to whether the tile is publicly or privately owned. That issue is currently being researched. The supervisors agreed to discuss the matter further once the owner has been determined.

Meanwhile, the residents say they’re concerned over the possibility of additional blowouts and sink holes opening up. They contend that most of the tile in that area is undersized, and that there are instances where large tiles are discharging into smaller ones.
