(Spirit Lake)– The recent warm weather has officials urging residents to refrain from open burning as much as possible until some significant rain falls.
Officials say the warm temperatures and dry vegetation are combining to increase the fire danger. And they say conditions could become even more volatile over the weekend as the wind is expected to pick up.
Spirit Lake firefighters were called to a grass fire shortly before 3:00 p.m. yesterday (Thurs.) in Diamond Lake Township, northeast of Welsh Lake. Fire Chief David Kollasch says a garbage fire got out of hand and spread to some nearby CRP grassland and a grove.
Firefighters were on the scene about an hour.
No injuries were reported.
