Hunting Accident Injures Ruthven Man

November 22, 2014

(Ruthven)– Authorities say a northwest Iowa man was injured while hunting snow geese near Ruthven.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 19-year-old Carl Jensen of Ruthven suffered minor injuries Thursday when the barrel of his friend’s 12-gauge shotgun exploded, hitting him in the hand.

Jensen was treated and released from an Emmetsburg hospital.

Officials say Jensen was hunting with 19-year-old Ethan Bakken, also of Ruthven. Bakken had taken a shot but the shell in his gun didn’t fire properly. Bakken reloaded and when he fired again, the barrel exploded. Authorities believe the barrel was blocked by the misfiring of the first shell.
