(Emmetsburg)– The latest scam reported making the rounds locally involves the hoopla over news of the Mega Millions Jackpot winners in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says it’s had reports of some people in the area receiving emails stating that they’ve actually won a share of the jackpot because their email address was attached to the Mega Millions Lottery winners. The scam asks the recipient to call a number and quote your personal information to a claims officer.
Authorities say a check with state lottery officials confirmed it’s nothing but a scam, another attempt by thieves to try to get your personal information. Anyone who has received such an email should contact their local law enforcement agency.
