(Spencer)– A two-vehicle collision at the north intersection of highways 71 and 18 in Spencer, or the north “Y”, has claimed the life of a Sanborn woman.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the scene shortly after 5:00 p.m. Monday where they found 63-year-old Leola Vanravenswaay of Sanborn trapped and unresponsive in her vehicle. She was extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say Vanravenswaay was eastbound on Highway 18 and entered the intersection with Highway 71 when she traveled into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Christopher Beyerhelm of Waukee. Beyerhelm was treated on the scene by paramedics for some minor cuts and bruises and was released. A passenger in Beyerhelm’s vehicle, Kent Allen of Altoona, was taken to Spencer Hospital for observation and was later released.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Police Department, Fostoria Fire and Rescue, Spencer Fire and Rescue and the Spencer ambulance and paramedics.
