(Wahpeton)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is putting out a call for anyone who might be interested in rooting through the trash. They’re looking for volunteers to assist with separating, weighing, documenting and bagging recyclables for processing.
The so-called “waste audits” are being held this summer at six state parks, including Gull Point on West Lake Okoboji. The waste audit for that location is scheduled for July 9th from 8:00 a.m. until 12 Noon. Volunteers are being asked to meet shortly before 8:00 that morning in the campground area at Gull Point. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing suitable for sorting through waste, along with close-toed shoes. Other safety equipment and instructions will be provided on the site.
The DNR is conducting the waste audits to help identify additional sustainability-related opportunities. They’re being held through partnerships with the DNR Land Quality Bureau, DNR Iowa Green Veteran’s Americorps program and Iowa Waste Exchange.
