Flower Pot Fire Results In Close Call For Milford Apartment Complex

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A close call this (Tues.) afternoon at a Milford apartment complex.

Milford firefighters were called shortly before 2:00 p.m. to Broadway Village Apartments at 1004 10th Street after getting a report of a structure fire.

Milford Police Chief Vernon Flack was the first on the scene and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Fire Chief Jim Carpenter says the source of the fire was a flower pot that had been used to dispose of cigarette butts on a second floor deck. He says peat moss in the flower pot ignited, and the fire quickly spread to the siding, decking and a railing.

Firefighters were on the scene about an hour and-a-half.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Department was called for assistance with manpower due to the heat, and the Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance stood by on the scene as a precaution.

Also assisting on the scene was the Milford Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and Milford Municipal Utilities.
