Local Law Enforcement Agencies To Step Up Enforcement Thanksgiving Week

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Motorists can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement officers on the road over the Thanksgiving holiday period.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the area will be participating in the enhanced enforcement project, known as STEP, or Special Traffic Enforcement Program.

Patrick Hoye, Bureau Chief of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, says the primary goal of the program is to convince all motorists of the importance of buckling up. In addition to that, he says officers will also pay close attention to impaired drivers and moving violations.

During the last STEP wave conducted in August through September, Iowa officers issued citations for 2,358 seatbelt violations, 847 impaired drivers, 13,443 speeding violations, and more than 34,000 traffic violations. Vehicle assistance was given to 1,980 motorists and 419 arrest warrants were served.
