Second Firearm Deer Season Opens Saturday In Iowa

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—Iowa’s second firearm deer season opens tomorrow (Sat.) and runs through Sunday, December 16th. Jeff Morrison is a Conservation Officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources…( click here for comment .) “The shooting hours and everything are just like the first season: a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. They can’t shoot from the roadway, you have to be inside the fenceline before you can discharge your shotgun shooting slugs. And you have to have obviously permission to be there. So things are all the same from one season to the other.”

Morrison says hunters saw some limited success during the first season last week…( click here for comment .) “There was some nice bucks harvested and some really nice deer harvested. But they also found the hunting kind of tough as far as locating them without any snow cover and things of that nature it makes it more difficult to locate the animals.”

Morrison reminds deer hunters of the blaze orange clothing requirement. He says the requirement for gun deer hunting is different than that for upland bird hunting. Morrison says the requirement for a gun deer hunter is the minimum of your upper body in SOLID blaze orange.
