Iowa Great Lakes Area Takes Glancing Blow From Major Winter Storm

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Great Lakes and surrounding area took a glancing blow from a major winter storm that’s wreaking havoc on a large part of the upper Midwest.

Locally the storm put down nearly three inches of snow (2.7″ to be exact), with lesser amounts to the west and north.

The snowfall has long since ended, but north wind gusting to nearly 35 mph is causing considerable blowing and drifting snow in open areas.

The conditions resulted in most schools in the area starting late, with some in outlying areas canceling classes altogether.

Law enforcement officials report no serious accidents or incidents, other than a few vehicles that went into the ditch.

The National Weather Service says the strong wind will continue through the day, before subsiding after midnight tonight (Thurs.).

Quiet but cold weather is expected the next several days, including through the Christmas holiday.
