New Program To Be Offered At Spirit Lake ILCC Campus

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake campus of Iowa Lakes Community College is gearing up for a new program it will be offering with the fall 2013 semester. Heather Asmus, Supervisor of the Spirit Lake campus, says it focuses on event planning…(click here for comment.) “It will be preparing students, it’s a diploma program so it will go for a year, preparing students who are interested in learning how to plan events, manage them, things like that. So if you’re thinking wedding planning of if you want to do something at the event center or golf courses, concerts. I mean it can incorporate a whole bunch of different areas. We will have classes from the business side, communications, then we’ll have new classes that we’re creating right now in catering, fundraising, wedding planning, all the different areas that you would need to be successful in event managing.”

Asmus says they decided to offer the program after interest was expressed by the community…(click here for comment.) “We actually had a focus group just for the campus in general about a year and-a-half ago I would say. The businesses that came said this is an area we could really use some help in. And so from that we just started thinking how can we make this, how can we have this happen? Because that’s what we’re here for, to give the community what they need. So we’re hoping that they’ll be able to take a lot of interns because the program is heavily internship-based. So hopefully they will want to train the new and upcoming event planners.”

The program will be instructed by ILCC graduates who are now working in that field…(click here for comment.) “We also have quite a few students who are Iowa Lake grads from different areas in Iowa Lakes who are now out working in events management. So they’re going to be coming back and teaching some of our classes. They have connections not only in Iowa but all over the U.S., so that will be exciting.”
