Weekend Calls Keep SL Firefighters On The Run

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Two actual fires and one false alarm kept Spirit Lake firefighters on the run over the weekend.

Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news firefighters were called to Campus Cleaners in downtown Spirit Lake Saturday after getting a report of a clothes dryer on fire…(click here for comment.) “Upon arriving an employee had used a fire extinguisher and put it out but we pulled all the stuff out of the dryer and ventilated the building to make sure it was safe for everybody to come in.” Okay. The fire was pretty much contained to just the one dryer unit then? “Yeah, pretty much contained to the dryer itself, like you say we pulled the power off the units and ventilated the building.”

The employee was taken by private vehicle to Lakes Regional Healthcare to be checked out for possible smoke inhalation.

A more serious fire took place Sunday evening at a trailer house in Center Lake Village in Spirit Lake. Kollasch says firefighters were called to lot 63…(click here for comment.) “An officer on the scene reported heavy smoke in the trailer. When we got there there were flames showing inside the trailer. Entering, we extinguished the fire in the living room side of the trailer house and investigated and ventilated.”

No one was home at the time the blaze broke out and no injuries were reported. Kollasch says the trailer house was pretty much destroyed. He says as of right now they aren’t sure of a cause. The Fire Marshall is expected to be at the scene later today (Mon.).

Firefighters were on the scene a couple of hours. They were assisted by the Spirit Lake Police Department and the Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and paramedics which stood by on the scene as a precaution.
