Officials Remind Of Change In Boat Registration Process

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—Boat owners are once again being reminded that this is a registration year, and all existing registrations expire this coming April 30th. And Jeff Morrison, an enforcement officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says owners will need to bring along some additional paperwork with them to their County Recorder Offices…(click here for comment.) “This year they’re transferring data systems I guess is the best way to put it. They’re changing over from the old system, they’re getting into the electronic licensing system so that they’ll be more readily available for searches and things of that nature. So it’s going to take just a few minutes longer and they need to bring more paperwork with them when they come up to get their boat registered. They need to bring their old registration with them when they come up so they can transfer all that information on that paper copy that they carry in their boat, into the computer system so now they’ll be able to search it a little bit easier, keep better track of registrations and things of that nature. So they have to have that paperwork copy so they can actually enter that data. So make sure that when you go up to the Recorder’s Office to get your boat registered that you make sure that you have that paper copy with you.”

To save time and avoid a long wait in line, Morrison recommends boat owners consider renewing their registrations now, instead of waiting until the April 30th deadline gets closer.
