SLPD Obtains New Canine

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—The Spirit Lake Police Department will be taking delivery of a new canine this summer. The department’s former canine, Yarra, had to be euthanized last year after coming down with a terminal illness. Officer Shane Brevik will be the handler for the department’s new canine, Kyle…(click here for comment.)  “The owner of North Iowa Canine is where we got Kyle and Yara is finishing up all the training so I should be picking him up hopefully in the next month.”

Brevik says Kyle is coming to the department from abroad…(click here for comment.) “Usually the dogs in Europe their blood lines are a little cleaner as far as work goes so it’s easier to get a dog in Europe then just have them shipped here. And with their initial training being in Europe whatever country they come from is the language they speak, I guess.”

Brevik says the new canine will be trained in several areas of expertise…(click here for comment.) “Being kind of stuck here in northwest Iowa they have to be a lot more versatile, trained in a lot more areas.”

After they’ve had some time to bond, Brevik says he will then undergo training on how to handle Kyle…(click here for comment.) “I think this year since I went through all his training last year I was 180 hours when I went through it last year which took me three weeks. This time he hasn’t given me a definite, a week and-a-half we thought we could probably get it, to get everything that needs to be covered but a lot of theory stuff since I went through that I don’t have to re-take a lot of classroom stuff so you know a lot more hands-on this time and not so much classroom this time.”

The Spirit Lake Police Department is seeking donations from the public to defray the cost of the new canine. Donations may be placed in canisters located at several businesses in the Great Lakes Mall, or they may be dropped off at the Spirit Lake Police Department.
