(Emmetsburg)– A child has died after a truck it was in somehow got knocked into gear and plunged into Five Island Lake near Emmetsburg Saturday.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the scene around 9:30 p.m. and found a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, owned by Lance Hanson of Emmetsburg, in the lake.
Authorities say three children were in the truck prior to them arriving. They say family members and witnesses were able to get two of the children out of the truck. A third was trapped in the vehicle, which was fully submerged. Rescue crews were able to free the child, who was taken to shore where life saving measures began. The child was transported to Palo Alto County Hospital. Hospital officials announced later the child, two-year-old Larzen Hanson of Emmetsburg, had died.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Emmetsburg Police Department, the Emmetsburg Fire Department, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Palo Alto County Conservation, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Palo Alto county Ambulance Service.
