Lakeside Lab Event To Feature Discussion On Zebra Mussels In The Iowa Great Lakes

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)—The presence of zebra mussels in the Iowa Great Lakes and how to cope with them will be the topic of discussion at an event Thursday at Lakeside Lab on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. Jane Shuttleworth, the lab’s Education Coordinator, tells KUOO news the program will feature two keynote speakers…(click here for comment.) “Mike Hawkins who’s a fisheries biologist with the DNR will be talking about the ecology of zebra mussels, and Eric Stohl who’s the Superintendent for Milford Regional Water Supply will talk about how the water plants are planning or preparing to be proactive for the impact zebra mussels might have on our drinking water supply.”

Shuttleworth says Thursday’s presentation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the porch of the Waitt Lab at Lakeside Lab…(click here for comment.) “It’s open to the public. It’s called Conservation Conversation so it’s more of a discussion format and we’ll have coffee and rolls.”

Shuttleworth expects there will be quite bit of interest in the program, given the recent discovery of zebra mussels in the Iowa Great Lakes…(click here for comment.) “I guess it’s just good for people to be able to ask questions because we know there are reproducing populations of zebra mussels. We tried to prevent them from coming here, but if we can’t do that, you know, what can we anticipate and how can we be proactive about it?”

Again Thursday’s Conservation Conversation begins at 9:00 a.m. on the porch of the Waitt lab at Lakeside Lab. It’s free and open to the public.
