(Wahpeton)— Area Fire Chiefs say a large grass fire Wednesday about a mile and-a-half west of Wahpeton is proof the recent hot, dry weather is starting to take its toll.
The Milford Fire Department was called to the scene at 1846 190th Street around 3:30 p.m. Fire Chief Jim Carpenter says given the size of the fire, the Spirit Lake Fire Department was immediately called for mutual aid.
Carpenter says firefighters spent about two and-a-half hours battling the fire that burned about 40 acres of land.
Carpenter says the fire was caused by someone cutting hay.
Carpenter says the recent hot, dry weather is rapidly drying out vegetation and that’s increasing the fire danger. He says anyone working equipment in grassy areas or doing any open burning should keep a close eye on things and have a way to extinguish any fire that should happen to break out.
No injuries were reported in Wednesday’s fire.
