(Spirit Lake)—Residents of one lakes area community are being asked to conserve on water as much as possible. Spirit Lake City Administrator Mark Stevens tells KUOO news as of right now the restrictions aren’t mandatory, but he says they’re pleading with residents to voluntarily cut back wherever they possibly can…(click here for comment.)
“The city treatment plant and pump house are operating at very high levels and we just want to remind the public that if they can, try to conserve water and make suggestions on some of the things that be good that they keep in mind before watering. Nothing mandatory, but we’re just asking for voluntary water usage restrictions at this time.”
While city officials admit the splash pad has probably contributed to the extremely high demand, Stevens says it’s role in the increased demand is relatively small overall…(click here for comment.) “Our estimate is that the splash pad is using about four percent of the total volume of water use in the city. So it’s not a lot, but it does contribute to it. I think lawn watering generally throughout town is the bigger factor.”
And when it comes to the splash pad, Stevens says the city has already taken some steps to reduce the amount of water it’s using…(click here for comment.) “Reducing the hours at the splash pad that we’ve already done is one of the steps we’ve taken so we can save water. We think we’re saving about 40,000 gallons a day by restricting use of the splash pad.”
Stevens also told the city council last (Tues.) evening that in the future they’ll be looking into ways of possibly recycling the water that’s used at the attraction.
