(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake Fire Department responded Sunday to two grassfires at the same location. Fire Chief Pat Daly says they were both near the water tower on Zenith Avenue…
“The first one we had was just a little tiny one. It was up by the water tower across from the old Hilltop there. We had that out, we hardly used any water on it at all. Then we got called back actually to the same spot a little after 6:00 and there was quite a bit of grass burning inside by the water tower. We got to looking and we had a broken cross arm up on one of the poles from Alliant. We cleared everybody out of there and we just kind of stood by until Alliant got there to shut it down.”
Daly says crews had to turn the power off to the nearby area to make repairs. He says that resulted in them getting some additional calls…
“We had some calls afterwards because they shut that whole line down. It shut down the nursing home and it shut down a couple of apartments over there. Their alarms were beeping because of the batteries, it was on batteries instead of power. We just had to make sure somebody was maintaining that in case there was a fire somewhere.”
Daly says the first time they were on the scene just briefly; he says they spent more than an hour there the second time. No injuries were reported and Daly says the water tower was never directly threatened.
