Spencer City Council Hears Update From Long Term Recovery Group

June 17, 2025

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday heard an update from the city’s Long Term Recovery Group as we near the one year mark of the devastating floods that hit that city. Coordinator Megan Hanges says they’ve made some inroads but a lot of work remains to be done as the city and its residents continue their recovery operations…

“Since our start as long term recovery, we have done about $35,000 in funding assistance. Now that doesn’t directly come from the LTRG, necessarily, some of it will. A lot of that is through different funders that sit at our at needs table. So our unmet needs table is where we bring a case and the funders decide whether or not they can fund that portion of their materials or their mold remediation or their foundation repair. Some of that was also a grant funded for Grace United Methodist Church to repair the showers in their basement so that when we do have those large volunteer groups come in they can stay there where they have a washer and dryer, a kitchen and a shower, a fellowship area, and somewhere to sleep. Twenty-plus homes have been worked in by volunteers that have come into our community from outside the community.”

Hanges says 13 sets of washers and dryers have been distributed to Spencer residents who lost those items in the flood. She says 42,000 pounds of new carpet has been donated along with a semi load of drywall.

Hanges says some additional missionary groups will be coming to Spencer soon to assist additional homeowners with their restoration efforts.
