Some Estherville Residents May Be Getting Notices Regarding Their Water Service Lines

November 06, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– A new EPA regulation requires drinking water suppliers, in most cases cities, to conduct an inventory of water service lines within their service areas. Such an inventory and inspection was recently completed in Estherville. City Administrator Penny Clayton outlined the findings at Monday’s City Council meeting…

“We have 14 confirmed lead service lines and we have 1,117 that have unknown material. So what we’ll be doing next is sending out a public notice that is required along with a survey which people, homeowners, can complete and submit so we can narrow down the unknown materials and then update the inventory as those come in.”

Clayton says unless the city is notified by the affected property owners that the service lines have been replaced, that they’ll have to continue to send notices to them on an annual basis. She says the EPA has a goal of having lead service lines replaced within the next 10 years.

Clayton adds the homeowner is responsible for the service line which runs from the water main into the residence.
