(Spirit Lake)– A common practice used by semi drivers to help slow down their rigs, known as “engine braking”, may soon be illegal in Spirit Lake.
The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday directed the City Attorney’s Office to draw up a proposed ordinance that would make it illegal for truckers to use the noisy braking method. Several other cities in the area, including Milford, already have such an ordinance on the books.
Some who live near busy roads have complained over the loud noise caused by engine braking.
But council members agrees with Police Chief Jeff Hanson who said enforcing the ordinance will be difficult for officers, unless they happen to be near a semi who’s driver happens to do it. They’re hoping, though, that signs that would be posted warning truck drivers the practice is illegal would be enough to take care of the issue.
