SL Council, Mayor To See Pay Hikes; Won’t Be Effective Though Until Jan. 1st, 2014

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Mayor and city council members will be getting increases in compensation as a result of action taken at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting.

Council members will see their compensation bumped up to $60 for each council meeting; and $30 for attendance at each authorized committee or commission meeting.

The Mayor will see his compensation increase from $4,000 per year to $5,400.

The changes won’t take affect though until January 1st, 2014.

In other business, the council studied three possible options for plans to rebuild Lake Street between Gary Avenue and Highways 9 & 71. One was to leave it as is; another was to make it a one-way street for westbound only traffic; another was to install a cul de sac in the street at Memorial Park. After learning the volume of accidents at the intersection of Lake Street and Highways 9 & 71 has been relatively low since 1998, it was the concensus of the council to direct the engineer on the project to design the street as it is currently, with two lanes of traffic extending all the way to the highway.

The council also authorized an agreement with the RDG planning firm not to exceed $5,000 for preliminary drawings for proposed improvements to Memorial Park.
