Shoplifting Complaint From E’Ville Business Results In Arrest Of ILCC Student On Drug Charges

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– An investigation into a shoplifting complaint at an Estherville store has resulted in drug charges being filed against a Virginia man.

Estherville police say it stems from a report officers received late Saturday afternoon regarding a man who had left the Dollar General Store in Estherville without paying for some merchandise. The clerk gave officers a description of the suspect and the vehicle he was driving. Officers located the vehicle a short time later in a parking lot at Iowa Lakes Community College. Officers went door-to-door in a dormitory complex. A man matching the description answered the door at one of the rooms. He was identified as 21-year-old David Cheney of Christianburg, Virginia.

While visiting with Cheney, officers could smell burned marijuana and could see marijuana and drug paraphernalia in plain sight. Police then obtained and executed a search warrant on the dorm room. They seized 1.5 grams of what’s alleged to be cocaine, two tablets of a prescription drug not prescribed to Cheney, nearly four grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Cheney was arrested and booked into the Emmet county jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance-cocaine; possession of a controlled substance-marijuana; possession of prescription drugs; possession of drug paraphernalia and fifth degree theft.

Cheney was released from jail on his own recognizance following an initial court appearance.
