Residents Told To Be On Lookout For Fundraising Scam

November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a scam involving solicitations for fire departments.

Chief Deputy Todd Suhr says they’ve received reports in which people have been contacted by telephone and asked to make cash donations to the Iowa Fire Association. Suhr says there actually is no such fundraising going on by that group.

He says if you’re contacted by phone and asked to give personal information such as bank account numbers, checking account numbers, social security numbers or asked to send cash donations, you should consider it a scam and hang up without leaving any personal information.

If you have questions about solicitations or donations, Suhr says you should contact the local authority for such organizations to confirm the information before donating, or donate directly to the local department or organization.

Anyone receiving such solicitations should also report it by contacting your local law enforcement agency.
