(Estherville)– The Northwest Iowa Concert Band and Jazz Band will hold a concert on Monday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Estherville VFW. The concert band is directed by Rich Nicklay and the jazz band by Scott Benjamin. Nicklay says it will be a night to enjoy…
“We are two community volunteer bands that have been in the area for now I believe 35 years and our Monday night concert will feature tunes of different styles that you will recognize and be very enjoyable. Its just an easy good hearted light concert.”
Nicklay talks about what the concert band will be playing…
“We’re doing John Phillip Souza’s Pathfinder of Panama which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year in 2025 and then we’re doing a collection of broadway show tunes that everyone will know called Broadway ShowStoppers and then I always like to find some interesting, unique songs. One is called New Mowin Hay. Those of us who live in rural Iowa or grew up on farms know what the smell of just freshly cut hay is. And this is a barn dance or a Scottish type of song. And we’re doing a collection of Irish turns called 40 Shades of Green. It’s an awesome piece of music.”
The Jazz band will also have some great music…
“They’re doing some dixie land, some blues, some ballads. They’re also doing a piece by Chuck Mangione. Some of the listeners might remember Chuck Mangione in the late 70’s very popular with his flugel horn and they’re also doing a swing tune.”
The concert for the Northwest Iowa Concert and Jazz Bands will be on Monday night starting at 7:30 at the VFW in Estherville. The VFW will serve a burger basket meal starting at 6:00 and the concert is free and open to the public.
