Manure Discharge Results In Fish Kill In O’Brien County

July 18, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Paullina)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say a manure discharge has resulted in a fish kill in O’Brien county.

The DNR’s field office in Spencer was notified Wednesday of dead fish in Mud Creek, south of Paullina. DNR officials say an investigation resulted in them discovering a nearby dairy operation had been land applying manure in a field which got into a blown out tile that discharges in the creek. They add they aren’t sure as to how much manure got into the creek. They say dead fish were observed several miles in the creek.

The DNR says the manure release as since stopped. Staff from the Spencer Field Office and Spirit Lake Fisheries Office are onsite and an investigation continues.

The agency says downstream water users should avoid using water from Mud Creek.
