Local Ag Official: Farmers Having To Adapt To Weather Extremes

March 27, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Worthington, Mn.)– Local ag officials are keeping their fingers crossed that predictions for precipitation over the weekend actually pan out and amount to something. Liz Stahl of the University of Minnesota Extension Service says the latest drought monitor shows a good deal of the region in moderate drought.

She says with the extreme conditions, it’s becoming more and more important to conserve soil moisture and to try to prevent wind erosion. Stahl says that’s where cover crops into play…

Stahl says it’s vital we get some moisture in advance of corn and bean planting, now just weeks away. Having said that, Stahl says we don’t need a repeat of a year ago in which we entered the season very dry, only to go straight to the other extreme with the massive flooding in June, followed by a return to drought. She says we’re having to learn with how to deal with the extreme conditions, which is a challenge.
