Local Ag Expert: It’s Been An Ideal Spring For Corn & Soybean Planting

May 07, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Planting of corn and soybeans is wrapping up for some producers in the region, with some saying they’re completely done. Andy Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says the conditions this spring have been nothing short of ideal…

“There’s been a huge planting window. Guys have made progress, a lot of folks are done, some folks are still going. I don’t really think anybody’s making any wrong decisions as far as folks that planted early. You can now drive around and see crops up and row it. Emergence has been pretty strong for the most part. Guys that are just getting into the field now, I mean these soil temps and air temps, that stuff is just going to scream out of the ground too and they’re not going to be far behind anybody. So it’s been a really, really good spring, I think, for area farmers.”

Nesseth says some locations that received heavy rain recently are experiencing some minor crusting of the soil…

“I did observe some of that out in the field here in the last two days just looking at crops. In general, I mean there’s some places that have it worse than others and there is a little bit of issues in places on that in terms of crusting and forcing some of that corn to leaf out onto the ground just a little bit. It’s sporadic, it’s not, you know, uniform even across a field. The crusting seems to be relatively thin as far as that goes and fairly crumbly so I still, I mean you’ve got to go out and look. I think it’s generally pretty minor.”

Nesseth encourages producers to be on the lookout for army and cut worm activity, as well as for any signs of corn borers.
