Jackson County Libraries Will Host Program On History Of Roof Garden

April 03, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Jackson County Library System will host an adult program about the Musical history of the Roof Garden Ballroom on Wednesday April 9th. Tom Tourville who turned his passion for music research into a career, and co-author Rebecca Peters, will be the presenters. Tourville explains what people can expect from the presentation…

“We’re gonna be doing a presentation basically you can kind of look at it as ah bands and Roof Garden and rock n roll. And I do want to tell everybody we’re not gonna have a lot on our presentation about Big Bands. I mean that is a period that we did not write about. We first found teen dances, teen hops at the Roof Garden Ballroom in 1953 and we go all the way up through 1987 when the ballroom really ceased to operate.”

Tourville says his favorite part of the presentations is talking to the attendees…

“More importantly one of the things we do is we ask them to kind of participate with us and tell us about some of their rock n roll stories attending dances at the Roof Garden and I’m sure everybody in Jackson County did have chances to go and see some great bands and do some dancing and have fun at the Roof Garden cause it was really the ah kind of the benchmark for ballrooms in about a 3 state area.”

The presentation on the History of the Roof Garden Ballroom will take place on April 9th. They will start at the Jackson Library at noon and then will head to the Lakefield Library at 2:00 and finish with a third presentation at the Heron Lake Library at 5:30.
