(Rock Valley)– A house fire near Rock Valley has claimed a life.
Rock Valley Firefighters were called shortly after 6:00 am Monday to 2096 340th Street in Sioux county, about seven miles southwest of Rock Valley. According to a press release, firefighters found the residence completely engulfed in flames when they arrived. A call for mutual aid was then put out to the Hull, Ireton and Sioux Center Fire Departments.
Authorities say the owner of the home, 67-year-old Mike Smit, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries related to the fire.
After extinguishing the fire, the body of a female was found in the basement. She was pronounced dead by the Sioux County Medical Examiner. The name of the victim is being withheld pending an investigation and notification of family members.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
