High Water Posing Special Dangers

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say boaters, anglers, paddlers and swimmers need to use extra caution this Fourth of July holiday weekend due to higher than normal water levels.

Susan Stocker, boating law admininstrator for the DNR, says near record flooding over most of Iowa has sent rivers out of their banks and sending downed trees and other debris downstream. She says currents in rivers and streams are extremely swift right now.

Stocker adds boaters will need to exercise plenty of patience at the boat ramp and that they’ll need to slow down and look for other boats and personal watercraft once out on the lake.

Anyone planning to drink should have a designated operator. And you should be sure to have a life jacket for each person on board.
