High Levels Of Bacteria Detected At Lakes Area Beach

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Warnings about fecal bacteria have been posted at 14 beaches at state parks in Iowa, including one in the Iowa Great Lakes.

Bacteria counts above state standards can lead to issues for swimmers, including stomach aches, diarrhea and skin infections.

Rain tends to make readings go up.

The very young, very old and those with immune deficiencies are particularly vulnerable. State health officials recommend swimmers avoid swallowing lake water and bathe immediately after swimming.

The beach at Gull Point State Park on West Lake Okoboji is among those with a warning in place.
