(Spencer)– The cause of a fire earlier today (Monday) that heavily damaged a building in Spencer is undetermined.
Firefighters were called shortly before noon to 3601 4th Avenue West and found heavy smoke coming from the exterior upon arriving. Two attack lines were deployed and firefighters made entry to the building. They had to retreat a few minutes later after the fire burned through the roof. Firefighters were able to make access to the attic by removing the ceiling in a doorway and were then able to extinguish the fire.
Extreme fire damage was reported to the attic with heavy smoke and water damage to the remainder of the building and its contents. There were no reports of any injuries.
Firefighters were on the scene nearly two and-a-half hours.
The Spencer Police Department, Spencer Hospital paramedics, and Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative assisted on the scene.
