First Snowfall Of Season Wreaks Havoc For Motorists, Trees And Power Lines

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– The first snowfall of the season this past weekend wreaked havoc on motorists and caused numerous power outages in the region.

About 6 inches of heavy, wet snow fell on the Iowa Great Lakes late Friday night and early Saturday, with much higher amounts to the east…where in some cases more than a foot fell.

The slushy snow coated trees and power lines. Winds gusting to more than 30 miles-per-hour at times Saturday brought down tree limbs and power lines, knocking out power to many areas. Officials with both Alliant Energy and Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative reported numerous outages during the day Saturday. Both utilities say most, if not all customers, had power restored by Sunday.

The first snowfall of the season gave motorists a crash course in winter driving techniques. For some, that was literal. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies assisted numerous motorists late Friday night and through the day Saturday that had gone into the ditch. No serious injuries were reported.
