Dickinson County To Contribute To Fish Barrier Study

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday for the county to contribute about $3,100 toward an engineering study into the possibility of installing a fish barrier somewhere near the Lower Gar Outlet.

The study has a total estimated cost of between $7,000 and $10,000.

The money the county is kicking in was left over from a Corps of Engineers study into the Lower Gar Outlet.

DNR officials, lakes area protective groups and others have been meeting recently to look into the possibility of installing a barrier in an effort to keep Asian carp, an invasive species of fish that can jump out of water, out of the Iowa Great Lakes.
