Dickinson County Regional Collection Center Has Free Compost & Woodchips Available

April 04, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– The Dickinson County Conservation Board has a little something for you if you’re looking to get a jumpstart on your garden and landscaping this spring. Charles Vigdahl operates the Dickinson County Regional Collection Center just east of Milford on County Road A-34…

“We take green waste and we convert it into stuff that can be useful like compost and wood chips. Yeah, we have plenty of compost for people, for their gardens, and it can be used for all sorts of things to increase that soil health, increase the water capacity in there. You can use it in your gardens, your lawns, your potted plants, around trees. There’s all sorts of things you can do with it.”

He says they also have plenty of woodchips available right now…

“We take the trees and we grind them and we keep back some of the woodchips. Yeah, you can use it for, we’ve got people using it for landscaping and especially around new plantings of trees. You can put it around there and it helps keep the soil moist and keeps out some of the weeds, too.”

And, the price is right…

“If you just load it up into buckets or into your truck or trailer with those shovels there’s no charge. You can come and take it any time, any time that we’re open, I should say. And then if you would like it loaded by me, I do have a wheel loader and it’s about three cubic yards so I can load pickups and trailers. It’s 10 dollars for one of those bucket loads.”

Vigdahl says you should call ahead at 338-2549 if you need it loaded for you. The center is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. It is closed on holidays.
