(Spirit Lake)– Monday’s Memorial Day program in Spirit Lake will once again be held this year at the Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts at Spirit Lake High School. Denny Perry, Commander of the Spirit Lake American Legion, says the program will begin at 10:00 am…
“Our guest speaker is Lieutenant Colonel Leann Fector and she’s going to be talking about what she did when she was in the service, and we’ll have the other things that go along with it, a moment of silence and a few other things that go along, the band, everybody. I even have a selection I’ve been asked to give about Come Visit My Grave.”
Perry says the flags at the courthouse lawn will not be put up this year due to some construction…
“There’s a lot of construction going on up there by the courthouse and the grass is wet. Everything is just a little wetter than it needs to be so I’ve decided that we’re not going to put the 325 flags up this year.”
Speaking of the courthouse, Perry says fundraising for renovations of the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza at the east entrance of the facility is kicking into high gear. He says the biggest part of that project will consist of replacing the engraved pavers with some memorial walls…
“Anyone that wants to have their name engraved on a granite, marble block we can get them signed up for that. We had the markers, the bricks in the sidewalk, but they just turned to dust. So all those people get their name engraved for free because they paid for that. So we’re really looking forward to that. It’s about a three year project and we’re about half way through it now.”
Anyone wanting more information on the project should contact the Dickinson County Veterans Services Coordinator Spring Jones.
