(Royal)– A superintendent of a local school district has resigned as the district tries to dig out of financial problems.
Monte Montgomery, Superintendent of the Clay Central-Everly school district, resigned before a community meeting Monday to discuss the district’s finances.
The school board will meet tonight (Tuesday) to make plans for interim leadership for the district, which is trying to come up with plans to deal with a $742,000 deficit.
School Board President Sue Brugman says the problem can be traced back to 2008 when the district exceeded its spending authority but filed a report showing a positive balance.
The Clay Central-Everly district is considering a restructuring plan that would cut about 17 staff positions.
